UNIT 1

Knowing Yourself and Orientation to School

 

UNIT 1 WORK DUE Monday, March 2nd, 2020

 The rubric for the unit work is in blue font and underlined below. Please look at the rubric before you start your unit work so you know how you will be evaluated. Make sure that you complete and hand in all work listed below.

The next worksheets deal with getting to know yourself and helping you succeed in the classroom.

 

The first file below called "my brand instructions" gives you instructions on how to create a title page for this course. The second worksheet called "My Brand Worksheet" organizes the information before you actually create the title page. You will have to complete the brand worksheet and the title page and hand both into your teacher.

Open the Interests inventory file below. You must fill in the worksheet with interests that you have at school and interests that you have outside of school. Hand in to your teacher.

Self Advocacy Reading and Questions. Please open and read the pages. It is NOT necessary to print off the pages. There are questions that must be answered and handed in. The last requirement in Unit one is for you, a Learning Strategies student, to write your classroom teachers a letter telling them a bit about yourself and how you can succeed in the classroom with help from them. The Self Advocacy Letter Grade 9 file is an outline for you to follow to prepare a rough copy of your letter. Once you are finished the rough copy, show it to your teacher for some feedback and then you will prepare a good copy, word-processed. A sample of proper letter format is on the bulletin board in the classroom.

Learning Skills Checklist use this checklist at the end of each unit to indicate how you are working in Learning Strategies. Hand the checklist in when you are finished each unit.

 

UNIT 2

UNIT 2 WORK DUE: Tuesday, March 31st

Activity 1:

 

The Mystery of Easter Island: 

 

Read pages 8-10 "The Mystery of Easter Island." Click the title on the left or this file: The Mystery of Easter Island (Activity 1).pdf

 

Complete the following sections and put answers in your GLE binder:

  1.  Complete Section A (multiple choice) on page 11 after reading the tips on how to answer multiple choice questions on the bottom of page 11. 
  2. Complete section B on page 12: "Reading a Map/Making Calculations."  You will have to use the map on page 9 to help you complete this. 
  3. Complete Section E on page 13.  This is about using the context to help you predict or figure out what a word might mean by using the sentence around it to help you.  Try not to look these up in a dictionary, but instead use clues in the sentences to help you.

Completion Checklist (To be printed out and put in GLE binder, and submitted to teacher.):

 

  1. Complete the KWL chart on page 103.  Note that you have to complete the K and W columns BEFORE you read, and you complete the L column AFTER your read.  What do you know already about cloning or Tasmanian Tigers? What do you want to know?
  2. Read the short article, Scientists Try to Clone Extinct Tasmanian Tiger." on pages 104-105. 
  3. Complete section A: Understanding the Selection on page 106. 
  4. Complete Section B, Number 2 (Write at least one paragraph explaining your response to the news article AND the questions noted in #1 of Section B.  If writing one paragraph, choose ONE of the questions and keep the focus on that topic.  If writing two, use a different question for each paragraph.  Remember good paragraph writing structure: Topic sentence, Point, example, explanation, Point, example, explanation, point, example, explanation, and finally, your conclusion sentence. USE THIS PLANNER TO HELP YOU WITH STRUCTURE: 11-Part Para Organizer.pdf
  5. Finish the KWL chart on Page 103, and then research the topic further on the Internet.  LIST YOUR WEBSITE SOURCE ON THE PAGE and then complete the small KWL chart on page 107 about your new research on this animal.
  6. Complete Section D: Vocabulary.  Look up the abbreviations in a dictionary and record their meanings, and then find others in the article and underline then, and note their meaning IN THE MARGIN OF THE PAGE.  (This means write the meaning on the side of the page.)  There are good dictionaries in class, and the best online dictionary is http://www.onelook.com    

 

Activity 3: "Against the Jungle"

Click on the file below to begin reading the short comic "Against the Jungle" which is based on a true story.

Completion Checklist:

  1. Read the short comic on pages 19-21.
  2. Read "Drawing Conclusions" on the bottom of page 22.  This will explain an important reading and thinking strategy to you.  Ask your teacher for more explanation if unclear about this. 
  3. Complete Section B: Critical Thinking.  Use the tips you read about in drawing conclusions to help you.  Answer the questions in full sentences. 
  4. Complete Section C: Writing (Message in a Bottle) on page 23.  Pretend to be the main character or protagonist in the comic, Juliane.  Use details from the comic to complete the message in a bottle.  Complete #1,2, and 3 in this section.  Remember that a message in a bottle is the idea that someone stranded on an island might put a message in a bottle, and then throw it into the ocean and hope that the ocean will carry it to someone who can then come and help that person.  
  5. Complete section E (Language Conventions) on End Punctuation on page 24.  Review the uses of the period, question mark, and exclamation mark.  Complete #1-9 in this section.   

 

Activity 4: "The Canoe"

Click on the file below and read the short reading on the canoe.  Answer the questions that follow on the sheet.  Use full sentences and use details from the reading to answer the questions.

Activity 5: "Short Opinion Essay Assignment"

Click on the file below and print it.  Read over the tips to writing a series of paragraphs carefully.  Choose one of the essay topics.  Look at the sample essay, and please note the use of MLA formatting.  Write your essay on your chosen topic.  Complete a draft, and have the teacher initial that it is done.  Then, type up a good copy and proofread it and submit it to the teacher.

Take a look at the OCDSB character education wheel.  Character_Education_poster_11x17_Eng.pdf This shows the characteristics we hope all students will display in person and online with others.  Your assignment is to make your own poster on ONE of those character education characteristics.  Students are required to complete a poster showing that they understand the character trait they select. Normally, this is a poster on paper.  For April/May 2020, this will be done digitally.  [The poster is to be completed on poster size paper and will be given to the students by the teacher.] The specific details of the assignment are listed below as well as the marking rubric.

Multitasking

 

Are you a multitasker? The introductory activity for this part of the unit is a card game experiment. Ask your teacher to go through the experiment with you and they will discuss the results of the game with you.

UNIT 4

Managing You (organization, time management, goal setting, study skills, test taking)

Summative   Due by Friday, January 17th

 

The summative consists of two parts: a critical thinking assignment worth 10% of the final mark and a brochure worth 20%. This marks 30% of the final mark in total.  The brochure instruction sheet tells you what information you are to place in the brochure.
