Learning Strategies

UNIT 1

Knowing Yourself and Orientation to School

 

UNIT 1 WORK DUE Feb 16th

The rubric for the unit work is in blue font and underlined below.  Please look at the rubric before you start your unit work so you know how you will be evaluated. Make sure that you complete and hand in all work listed below.

Print off the Orientation assignment below.  You will have to use your agenda, the school website (www.othspanthers.ca) and a walk around the school.  Once you complete the assignment, hand it in.

The next worksheets deal with getting to know yourself and helping you succeed in the classroom.

 

The first file below called "my brand instructions" gives you instructions on how to create a title page for this course.  The second worksheet called "My Brand Worksheet" organizes the information before you actually create the title page. You will have to complete the brand worksheet and the title page and hand both into your teacher.

Open the Interests inventory file below.  You must fill in the worksheet with interests that you have at school and interests that you have outside of school.  Hand in to your teacher.

The following 2 quizzes to complete helps you figure out if you are a left brain or right brain thinker as well as give you tips on how you learn and if you learn by seeing, hearing or doing or a combination of the three.  These two quizzes will also give you tips on how you learn in classes.  Once you complete the two quizzes and have analyzed the results, hand in to your teacher.

Self Advocacy Reading and Questions. Please open and read the pages. It is NOT necessary to print off the pages. There are questions that must be answered and handed in. The questions are:   Jump-In questions 1, 2, and 3.  "Why Self-Advocacy" Jump-in questions 1 and 2.  "Strategies" Jump-in questions 1 and 2.  Once all of these questions are finished, hand them into your teacher.

The last requirement in Unit one is for you, a Learning Strategies student, to write your classroom teachers a letter telling them a bit about yourself and how you can succeed in the classroom with help from them.  The Self Advocacy Letter Grade 9 file is an outline for you to follow to prepare a rough copy of your letter.   Once you are finished the rough copy, show it to your teacher for some feedback and then you will prepare a good copy, word-processed.  A sample of proper letter format is on the bulletin board in the classroom.

Learning Skills Checklist use this checklist at the end of each unit to indicate how you are working in Learning Strategies.  Hand the checklist in when you are finished each unit.

 

 

Note:  Students are required to complete the ALL THE RIGHT TYPE contract before the end of the semester.  This contract is to be completed as a warm-up activity or whenever the student has time remaining in class.  The completed contract is to be placed in the summative portfolio at the end of the semester.

UNIT 2

Literacy 

 

UNIT 2 WORK DUE March 9th

You will need to work on your literacy skills the entire time you are in high school.  You will also need to pass the Ontario Literacy test in grade 10.  It is a graduation requirement.

Learning Strategies students are to access the literacy preparation wiki at http://othsliteracytest.pbworks.com/FrontPage   This wiki is to help students prepare for the OSSLT by simulating questions typical of those that will appear on the test.  Follow the instructions for each of the sections of the sample test and complete the written parts for each section.  You are required to hand in your answers for each of the four sections for evaluation. 

 

 

UNIT 3 

Communication

A Community of Character

 

UNIT 3 WORK DUE April 5th

The word search below introduces you to the character initative that the school board is promoting in each school.

Watch the DVD "Radio" and answer the questions on the handout.

Students are required to complete a poster showing that they understand the character they were assigned to research.  The poster is to be completed on poster size  paper and will be given to the students by the teacher.  The specific details of the assignment are listed below as well as the marking rubric.

Multitasking

 

Are you a multitasker?  The introductory activity for this part of the unit is a card game experiment.  Ask your teacher to go through the experiment with you and they will discuss the results of the game with you.

The last assignment in this unit requires that you research the advantages and disadvantages of multitasking.  You must use a valid search engine and websites because you have to write down the websites where you found the information. Open the link below for complete instructions.

UNIT 4 

Managing You (organization, time management, goal setting, study skills, test taking)

 

UNIT 4 WORK DUE May 4th

Organization and Time Management 

Read the Case entitled Tara's Vanishing Day .  When you finish reading the case, open the worksheet below. You will have to go back to the case and find things where Tara let her day slip away and list them, then suggest why it happened and how she could fix the problem.

After you complete the worksheet, you are required to write an email to Tara.  She has applied for a job where you work and based on what you saw happen in the case study, you must tell her whether she has a job at your business or not.

Sometimes you need to organize your days so that you can get the most done in a short period of time.  Organizing your day also lets look at how many thing you have to do.  The link to the worksheet below requires you to look at your priorities and fill in a chart with your commitments to see how much free time you have.

UNIT 5 

Summative

 

The summative consists of two parts: a portfolio and a brochure.  Each part is worth 15% of your final mark for a total of 30%. The portfolio checklist gives you a list of the items that are to be placed in the portfolio with instructions.  The brochure instruction sheet tells you what information you are to place in the brochure. 

 

Each student has a file folder with their name on it to store your completed work for the summative.  The file folders will be left in the classroom in a filing cabinet.
